The tradition Pahalgam route has been used for centuries which take almost 5 days to complete while the recently opened Baltal route offers quick visit to the Amarnath shrine and can be completed in a single day.

There are two routes by which pilgrims can visit the holy cave of Amarnath.

ROUTE 1: Pahalgam – Amarnath Route

This is the traditional route of the Amarnath pilgrimage that has been followed by the pilgrims over the years. The distance between Jammu to Pahalgam is 315 km and can be covered by taxi or buses. These are available at Tourist Reception Centre J&K Govt, Raghunath Bazaar early in the morning.

You can reach Srinagar to Pahalgam. The journey will be convenient as Pahalgam is just 95 km from Srinagar. Travel to Srinagar by air and take a bus or taxi from there.

Traditional Route: Jammu – Patnitop – Anantnag – Pahalgam – Chandanwari – Pissu Top – Sheshnag – Panchtarni – Amarnath Cave Temple

Other Route: Srinagar (by flight) – Anantnag – Pahalgam – Chandanwari – Pissu Top – Sheshnag – Panchtarni – Amarnath Cave Temple

ROUTE 2: Baltal – Amarnath Route

This route is much shorter compared to the traditional Pahalgam route that pilgrims undertake for Amarnath Yatra. The Baltal route allows pilgrims to take a round trip in 1-2 days.

However, this route is steeper and difficult as compared to the Pahalgam route. Young and healthy people looking for adventure amidst the religious trip happen to take this route as it is more challenging with limited facilities and food stalls.

Route: Srinagar – Sonmarg – Baltal – Domali – Barari Marg – Sangam – Amarnath Cave Temple

Both the routes are quite common among the pilgrims and you will have many people accompanying you in the journey.

Shri Amarnath Yatra is a one of a kind journey. The zeal with which the people undertake the pilgrimage is commendable. Whether for religious reasons or not, we recommend you to undertake Amarnath Yatra at least once in your lifetime.
