Only the pujaris, priests and permitted member of Temple Board participate in the aarti at Vaishno Devi Mandir.
The procedure of aarti at Vaishno Devi Mandir is long one. The arti is offered to the holy deity at two places. First in the sanctum sanctorum and then outside the cave. Before starting the aarti various puja rituals are done. One primary ritual known as ‘Aatam Pujan’or self-purification is performed by the temple priests. Then Panchamrita Puja takes place in which Goddess is bathed in milk, water, honey and ghee.
The Goddess is afterwards dressed up beautifully by using saree, chola, chuni and also decked with ornaments. During the whole religious process the shlokas and mantras are recited. After that tilak or sacred mark is placed on the forhead of the Goddess and Naivedya (prasad) is offered.
The diya or Jyoti is lighted up and then aarti takes place. After completing the prayers inside the temple, outside the cave aarti is performed in attendance of the yatris. Later, when aarti gets finished Prasadam and charanamarit is distributed to the devotees by the pujaris.
The sacred aarti at Vaishno Devi takes place twice a day in the morning and evening. Timings of the aarti at Vaishno Devi temple are fixed. Morning aarti is performed early morning before sunrise and evening aarti after the sunset. Aarti goes on for long 2 hours. During the arti devotees are not allowed to do the darshan.
