Pattupurakkal Bhagavathi Temple in Kottayam, Kerala

Pattupurakkal Bhagavathi Temple is also known as Kattampack KizhakkumBhagam Pattupurakkal Bhagavathi temple. It is an old shrine dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali. Situated in Njeezhoor village, Kottayam, this is the only temple in the entire town where the presiding deity is Sree Bhadrakali. In Hindu mythology, it is believed that Bhadrakali Lord Shiva's daughter. Yakshi and Bhagavathy are the sub-deities in the temple. Within the temple premises, there is a big auditorium where marriage functions are conducted.

Festivals/Events Celebrated at Pattupurakkal Bhagavathi Temple in Kerala

  • Pattupurackal Bhagavathy temple celebrates its annual festival on every Malayalam month of Meenam. The 12-day long festival starts with Pongala. Special poojas are organized during the festival.
  • Pongala is celebrated every year during the annual festival. It commences a day before the 12-day annual festival.
  • Mudiyettu is celebrated in Pattupurakkal Bhagavathi Temple on the completion of the annual festival. Mudiyettu is a ritual dance-drama performed in Bhadrakali temple and a prime attraction.
  • Valiya Guruthi is performed a day after the 12-day festival. It is believed to be the most powerful pooja and known to remove all obstacles and evil forces in one’s life.

Other festivals celebrated with great pomp in Pattupurakkal Bhagavathi Temple are – Vidhyarambham on the completion day of Navaratri, Ashtadravya Maha Ganapathi Homam on Vinayaka Chathurthi, Sarvaiswarya pooja, Agenda Namajapam and Varapodio offering on the full moon day of every month for subordinate deities.
