Located on the Pratapnagar and Devprayag border, the Chandrabadani Devi Temple lies atop the Chandrabadani mountain. Dedicated to Goddess Shakti, this temple is one of the most famous temples in Hindu mythology. Devotees have to climb a sharp ascend to the top of the mountain to offer their prayers. Believed to be one of the highly worshipped 52 Shakti Peethas, this temple is significantly famous. Unlike other temples in Uttarakhand, the idol worshipped here is a “Shree Yantra” carved on a flat stone instead of an idol.
According to a mythological tale, here Goddess Sati’s torso fell while Lord Shiva performed Tandav holding her consumed body after she offered herself to the fire. Apart from that, Chandrabadani Devi Temple is also the place where Rivers Bhagirathi and Alaknanda unite to form the holy river Ganges.
Located at such a great height, the temple offers panoramic views of the snow-capped Himalayan mountains, the Garhwal Hills and spectacular sight of famous peaks like Badrinath and Kedarnath.
