Located 25 kms from the sacred city of Puri, Alarnath temple is located in Brahmagiri and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu as Lord Alarnath. Thousands of Krishna devotees flock in Brahmagiri to worship Lord Alarnath and taste the pot of kheer (sweet rice porridge) as a Prasad. It is believed that those who cannot worship the deity of Lord Jagannath during his stay in the sick chamber can get the blessings of the deity if they visit the Alarnath temple.
According to the mythology, Lord Brahma came down and worshipped Lord Vishnu at this place. The deities of Lord Krishna’s queens Rukmini and Satyabhama are also find inside the temple. Idol of Lord Chaitanya is also found inside the temple. Lord Vishnu was very pleased with his worship and advised Lord Brahma to create a deity of Lord Vishnu made of black stone. Lord Vishnu named the place Brahmagiri in admiration to Lord Brahma’s devotion (Brahma’s hill).
Alarnath Temple is situated in Brahmagiri is just 25 kms from Puri and 67 km from the capital city of Bhubaneswar. One can easily reach Alarnath by bus or taxi. Best time to visit Alarnath is during anavasara period of Lord Jagannath when the deity rests and not available for public display. Famous tourist attractions in and around Alarnath are Chilika Lake, Baliharachandi and Satapada.
