Keleswaram Mahadeva Temple in Kerala is situated between Peringammala and Punnamoodu. It is located on a small hill. Lord Shiva is the main deity worshipped here, while the sun-deities worshipped in the temple are: Lord Vishnu, Lord Ganesh, Durga, and Nagaraja. The shrine is the starting point of the holy Sivalaya ottam - a run through the twelve Shiva temples.
It is believed that the temple dates back to the 10th century. The stone carvings in the temple date back to the eleventh century i.e. the reign of Rajendra Chola I. Historical records reveal that the temple was renovated in 1470 A.D.
Mythological stories state that the temple has been present in all four Yugas. It is believed that the Kara Maharaja placed a Shiva Linga to worship the Lord. One day, a bull came to the temple to garzing. After sunset, the bull lost its way back home and entered the temple. Devotees believe that the bull sat on the sanctum and was unable to move. This bull is the Nandhi in the temple.
The temple is renowned for its miraculous powers.
The major festivals in Keleswaram Mahadeva Temple are Maha Shivaratri and Thiruvathira, celebrated by huge crowd.
