One of the oldest and the most revered temple of Malabar is the Thalikkunu Shiva Temple. Currently, the Temple is under His Highness Zamorin of Calicut. The temple has been attacked and reconstructed many times. The main deity worshipped in the temple is Lord Shiva, and the sub-deities are Lord Ganapathi, Lord Ayyappa - worshipped inside the Ullambalam and Lord Nagaraja is revered on the outside close to a Banyan Tree.
The temple has immense historical significance as it has been attacked and restored many times. It is of religious importance, as it is the oldest temple in God’s own country.
The most famous festival celebrated in Thalikkunu Shiva Temple is Maha Shivaratri. It is celebrated on in the Hindu calendar month Maagha. Out of all the twelve Shivaratri in a year, Maha Shivarathri is believed to be the holiest. Maha Shivaratri celebrations include Kazcha Sheeveli accompanied with Elephant, Chuttu Vilakku, Vilakinezhunallippu Maha Ganapathi Homam and much more. Cultural performances by children after Prasadam distribution and Annadanam are conducted.
