Kandiyoor Sree Mahadeva Temple is an age-old Shiva temple in Kandiyoor, Mavelikkara. It is situated on the banks of the Achankovil stream. Earlier Kandiyoor was the capital of the Odanadu kingdom. The famous temple is spread over acres. There are numerous legends associated with the temple. It is believed to be among 108 extraordinary Shiva temples of Kerala blessed by Lord Parashurama himself.
One famous historical tales associated with Kandiyoor Sree Mahadeva Temple is about the battle that took place between the Odanad Kingdom and Kayamkulam dynasty. It is believed that the King of Kayamkulam dynasty lost in the war. Later, he entered the temple to surrender his sword to God and escaped through the temple. Since then the rear door is permanently closed.
In Kandiyoor Sree Mahadeva Temple Lord Shiva is worshipped in three forms. He is revered as Dakshinamoorthy in the morning, as Umamaheswaram at noon and as Kirathamoorthy in the evening. Thiru Utsavam is an annual festival celebrated in December-January. It ends on Thiruvathira Nakshatra Day in Dhanu. The festival begins with a flag hoisting ceremony or Kodiyettam. The temple is decorated with flowers, coconut leaves, flowers, lamps, lights and plantain. Along with special poojas and offerings, Annadanam is also organized.
