An abode to numerous deities and various temples, Uttarakhand is famously known as the land of various holy and ancient homes. Located in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, the Dhari Devi Temple is beautifully situated on the banks of the sacred river Alaknanda. The presiding deity of this temple is Goddess Dhari. According to popular belief, anyone that visits this temple gets their wishes granted and fulfilled by the Goddess. The upper half of the idol is worshipped here in the form of Goddess Dhari, and the other half is worshipped in Kalimath, as Goddess Kali. The Dhari Devi Temple is also believed to be amongst the 51 Shakti Peethas.
The Dhari Devi Temple is famous for its compelling stories and legends. Dhari Devi is considered to be the protector of the Char Dhams and Uttarakhand itself. Many years ago, a devastating flood washed away this temple and the idol of Goddess Dhari was stuck between the rocks. Villagers heard her painful cry and established the idol at this location. This is how the temple was established. Devotees visiting this temple also say that they have witnessed the ageing of the idol from a girl’s form to a women’s form and finally a lady.
