A proud World Heritage Site, Konark Temple is a majestic temple dedicated to Sun God. Kona means ‘corner’ and Arka means ‘Sun’ hence Konark means ‘Sun of the Corner’. This intricately carved temple was built in 13th century under the reign of King Narasimhadeva I of Ganga dynasty. The temple is designed in a form of a huge chariot drawn by seven mighty horses.
Around the base of the temple there are images of animals, foliage, warriors on horses and other interesting structures. The temple is constructed in such a way that the first rays of the sun enter the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. The temple also has sundials that accurately measure the time of the day! The Konark Dance Festival organized here every year is a great attraction for tourists.
Konark Temple is situated at a distance of 35 kms from the revered city of Puri and kms from the capital city of Bhubaneswar. One may also hire a taxi either from Puri or from Bhubaneswar to reach the temple. Famous tourist attractions in and around Konark Temple are Ramachandi, Chandrabhaga, Kakatpur, Kuruma, Chaurasi, Balighai and Beleswar.
