Believed to be about 1000 years old, the Poonkunnam Siva Temple, is situated in the Punkunnam district, the festive district of Thrissur, Kerala. It is one of the most biblical temples in the whole country. This temple holds an essential place in the history of Kerala as it gets its name from the country's very own Lord Siva and is constructed in the central part of the city. Pilgrims believe that it was built by Lord Parshuram and the prime deity here is an incarnation of one of the many avatars of Lord Siva.
The Poonkunnam Siva Temple was built by the rajas of the medieval century, and each visitor holds a 4-day fast before entering this temple. Daily rituals and ceremonies are carried out here at 3:50 in the morning every day. Idols are decorated with fresh flowers everyday, and according to local belief, the devotees who attend this aarti are freed of all their sins. Millions of believers from all over the globe flock in high numbers to this temple during the Sabarimala season. Free food is provided to guests during this season as well. This temple also boasts ornate ancient architecture.
