Panachikkad Saraswathi Temple is a shrine that is considered extremely powerful and is known as the Mookambika of the South. Goddess Saraswati is the main deity in the temple.
When you enter the Panachikkadu Temple, you will see a Vishnu temple. The temple does not have the traditional sanctum sanctorum nor a grand structure like the other famous temples in the state. A rectangular pond-like structure in the temple is carved out of a granite hillock. The lush green creepers grow in the pond and cover the goddesses idol.
The USP of Panachikkad Saraswathi Temple is the creepers and the immaculate spring. Creeper leaves that cover the idol are known as Saraswathi leaves. The water that falls from the spring touches Devi’s feet and does not dry even when the summer is at its peak. The spring water is considered pure and is used for poojas.
Above the Panachikkad Saraswathi Temple, there are exotic plants and fragrant flowers. It is believed that ‘yakshi’ lives here. The effigy of ‘Brahmarakshas’ is also installed in the temple. Idols of Siva, Sastha, Ganapathi, Nagayakshi, Nagaraja and other sub deities are installed here too.
Panachikkad Saraswathi Temple celebrated Vidyarambham daily unlike other temples. On this day, children venture into the world of education. A grand international cultural fest is organized during Navratri. Vijayadashami and Mahanavami are celebrated too.
