Mithrananthapuram Trimurti Temple in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala

Mithrananthapuram Trimurti Temple is situated close to the Padmanabha Swamy temple in Thiruvananthapuram. There are temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma within the temple premises. The Trinity is worshipped as the prime deities here. Lord Brahma can be seen in a sitting posture, and Lord Vishnu in a standing position. All gods are facing east. Lord Ganesh and Nagaraja are the sub deities in Mithranandapuram Trimurti Temple. Mythological tales mention that Villwamangalath Swamiyar consecrated the idols of the temple. Devotees believe that the Trimurtis conducted a great fire yajna here, to the Sun God, Mithra, hence the temple is known as Mithrananthapuram, 'the town which gave happiness to the Sun.

Mithrananthapuram Trimurti Temple is Famous For

The shrine is famous for three temples inside the complex. First, Vishnu temple with a Garuda statue is situated outside. Next to the Vishnu temple is the shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. To the south-west of the temple is Ganesha’s temple. Next to it is the Nagaraja temple. Behind Lord Vishnu’s temple, there is the Brahma temple. Unlike any other Brahma temple in India, here rituals are conducted like any other temple. Lord Brahma’s statue has only one head instead of the four. It is believed that here Lord Brahma was consecrated to ward off a Yakshi. Earlier women were not allowed in this temple, but now with certain restrictions, they are allowed to enter.

‘Ashtami Rohini’, Lord Krishna’s birthday is celebrated with grandeur in the temple. Maha Shivaratri too, is celebrated in the temple with great enthusiasm.
