Kaviyoor Mahadeva Temple in Pathanamthitta, Kerala

Kaviyoor Mahadeva Temple is also known as Thrikkaviyoor Mahadeva Temple. The main deities worshipped in the temple are Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. Idols of Ganapathy, Maharshi and Dwarapalakas are also present in the temple premises. The holy shrine falls under the Thiruvalla Group of Temples. River Manimala in the temple surroundings makes the environment serene and spiritual. Kaviyoor Mahadeva Temple is declared as a heritage site owing to its immense historical value.

Historians date the Kaviyoor Mahadevar Temple to as early as the eighth century AD owing to its resemblance to the Pallava style of architecture.

Festivals/Events Celebrated at Kaviyoor Mahadeva Temple in Kerala

Festivals observed in Kaviyoor Mahadevar Temple are:

  1. Thiru Utsavam is observed annually during December – January). Utsava Bali, Seva, Pallivetta are the main functions during Thiru Utsavam.
  2. Sivaratri is celebrated in February/March.
  3. Vilakkezhunnellippu – lighting of 8000 Diyas by devotees of 8 Kara’s(Desam).
  4. Sahasra Kalasam, i.e. Abhishekam with 100 pots consisting of 1 gold pot, ten silver pots and remaining copper pots for ten days is celebrated in the temple.
  5. Hanuman Jayanti is also conducted in the temple.

The main offering at Kaviyoor Mahadevar Temple is Aval Nadyam and Vada Mala.
