Garjiya Devi Temple in Ramnagar, Uttarakhand

Situated near Ramnagar village in the state of Uttarakhand, the Garjiya Devi Temple is amongst the most sacred religious sanctuaries in India. The current presiding deity here is that of Goddess Garjiya Devi. It is believed to be over 150 years old and is one of the most revered temples in the state. Idols of Lord Ganesha and Saraswati Devi are also a part of this temple. The Garjiya Devi Temple is situated at the height of 4.5 meters on a large rock over the Kosi River. Thus, it is not only a hotspot for devotees but also a popular destination among bird watchers and is home to some of the rarest species of birds like the Himalayan Kingfisher and many more.

Garjiya Devi Temple is Famous For

For the residents of Garjiya, this temple and the river tributary, both are considered to be very promising. Priests and locals passionately narrate stories about the same, but according to a famous legend, around 150 years ago a priest dreamt about the area flooding. The next day Gajiya got hit with a devastating flood; however, the priest noticed a massive pile of mud and clay accumulating at one place. The priest decided to sit on that pile and pray for the mountain to obstruct the flooding water, and it rose to 100 meters in length. Since then, the place is known as the Garjiya Temple.
