Ernakulam Shiva Temple, Kerala

Ernakulam Shiva Temple is one of the major temples of Kerala, located in Ernakulam. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The deity is reverently called Ernakulathappan - Lord of Ernakulam. The temple is situated within the Durbar Hall Ground. The temple was one of the seven royal temples of Kochi Maharajas.

Ernakulam Shiva Temple is Famous For

Ernakulam Shiva Temple is built in showcases Kerala style architecture. Its Sanctum complex is circular with elegantly sculpted walls. The presiding deity of the temple is Lord Shiva in Gourisankar form, located in the main sanctum sanctorum. The idol is believed to be Swayambhoo. On the northern side of the main sanctum sanctorum, there is a small shrine of Kirathamoorthy. On the southern side, is a small shrine for Lord Ganesha and the small area behind the main sanctum sanctorum is known as the abode of Goddess Parvati. The east gate is known as the Devi Gate. Outside the temple circle, there are shrines for Lord Ayyappa and Nagaraja.

Festivals/Events Celebrated at Ernakulam Shiva Temple, Kerala

One of the significant festivals of Ernakulam Shiva Temple is the ‘Utsavam’, celebrated during December-January. The festival commemorates with Kodiyettam on the very first day. Followed by Pakalpooram on the seventh day, when the deity is being taken out in a procession with dressed up elephants and Panchavadyam. It concludes at Durbar Hall after Pandimelam and fireworks. After all these, the famous Arattu procession commences.
