Kalarivathukkal Temple in Kannur, Kerala

Kalarivathukkal Bhagavathy Temple, Bhadrakali Shrine is located near Valapattanam river. It is the family shrine of Chirakkal Royal Family. The deity of the shrine is Bhadrakali.

The temple is in traditional Kerala architecture style. The temple design is Rurujith Vidhanam where there are shrines of Shiva, Sapta Mathrukkal, Ganapathy, Veerabhadra and Bhairava in 4 sanctums.

The temple is open throughout the year, in the morning there is Usha Pooja, at noon Pantheeradi Pooja and in evening Shakti Pooja.

Kalarivathukkal Bhagavathy Temple is Famous For

Theyyam is a religious ritualistic art-form conducted in Kalarivathukkal Bhagavathy Temple. The shrine is the family deity of Kolathiri conducts the last Theyyam commencing the Theyyam period of a year. The huge Thirumudi of Kalarivathukkal Amma’s theyyam is a prime attraction of the festival.

Festivals/Events Celebrated at Kalarivathukkal Bhagavathy Temple in Kerala

There are two major festivals are there in the shrine – Pooram festival celebrated in March–April for nine days; starts in Karthika Nakshatra and ends in Uthram nakshatra of the Malayalam Calendar, Meenam month. On the 7th day, the idol is escorted to Shri Siveshwaram Temple on the 8th to Kadalai Shri Krishna Temple, and on the 9th day, it is taken back along with fireworks. The festival commences by the Kalarippayattu performance. Musical and traditional art performances such as Thayambaka, Poorakkali are also performed.

In June Kalasham festival concludes the Theyyam period of a year. Other festivals celebrated in Kalarivathukkal Bhagavathy Temple are Navaratri, Perum Kaliyattam, Shivarathri, Vishuvilakku, and Niraputhari.
