Sree Kadampuzha Bhagavathy Temple in Malappuram, Kerala

Sree Kadampuzha Bhagavathy Temple is dedicated to Goddess Kiratha Parvathi. Rituals and pooja ceremonies are held close to a hole where she is believed to have disappeared after appearing to Adi Sankaracharya. Mythology states that the tunnel was built by the arrow of the Hindu God, Lord Shiva.

The origin of Sree Kadampuzha Bhagavathy Temple is associated with the Mahabharata. However, it was founded by Adi Shankaracharya on the day of Karthika in November – December. Festival is observed on this auspicious day.

Goddess Kiratha Parvathi is worshipped in Sree Kadampuzha Bhagavathy Temple in three forms.

  1. In the morning, goddess is worshipped as Saraswati.
  2. In the afternoon, she is worshipped as Durga.
  3. In the evening, as Mooladurga - Lakshmi.

The temple derives its name from - Kadan Ambu Eitha Uzha – meaning, The Place where Kiratha Shot the Arrow. Kadan is Kiratha, Ambu is Arrow, Eitha is Shot, and Uzha is Place.

Another version states that the Sree Kadampuzha Bhagavathy Temple derived its name from:
Kattile Anbin Urava - meaning The spring of compassion in the forest. Kadu is forest, Anbu is compassion, and Urava is spring.
